I work with a variety of mental health populations, ranging from anxiety, depression, addiction, men's and women's issues, etc.
One of my unique specialties is in sex and relationship therapy, making me one of Virginia's few therapists dedicated to this crucial area.
For over five years, I have had the privilege of walking alongside clients as they explore and understand their sexual orientation, compatibility, trauma (sexual and otherwise), and gender identity.
I’m especially committed to serving the LGBTQIA+ community; however, I support all individuals as they navigate marital or relationship challenges, sex addiction, sexual kinks, BDSM experiences, and more.
In addition to these specialties, I also work with clients on a wide range of co-occurring or independent issues, including personality disorders, grief, anxiety, and depression.
My approach is warm, non-judgmental, and client-centered, ensuring that you feel safe and supported as we work together to achieve your goals.
Before the intake, you should ensure that you have filled out your consent form and that your insurance company covers therapy.
Your credit card, consent form, and intake paperwork need to be completed and up to date and returned to the therapist so your first session is smooth, worry-free, and truly focused on the most important aspect of your session: you!
The first session with me is called an intake, and I will ask you many purposeful questions.
It typically takes about the same length as a typical session but no less than 53-60 minutes.
Our initial session is about getting to know you—your story, goals, and what has brought you to this point. We’ll take time to discuss what you hope to achieve in therapy and explore any concerns or questions you may have.
Therapy does not happen just in our session. In between sessions, this is what you can expect:
1. Ongoing Reflection: Clients may continue to reflect on the insights and strategies discussed during their sessions, integrating them into their daily lives and experiences.
2. Homework and Assignments: If applicable, clients might have specific tasks or exercises to complete that are designed to reinforce and build upon the work done in therapy.
3. Self-Management: Clients will have the opportunity to apply coping skills and techniques learned in therapy to manage daily challenges and stressors.
4. Communication: In some cases, clients might have access to brief communication with their therapist via email or a secure messaging platform for questions or updates, depending on the established communication guidelines.
5. Progress Tracking: Clients can track their progress toward their goals and note any changes or new issues that arise, which can be discussed in the next session.
6. Emotional Processing: Clients might process their emotions and experiences independently, gaining insights and understanding that will contribute to their therapeutic journey.
Overall, the time between sessions is an opportunity for clients to actively engage with their therapeutic work, applying and reflecting on the tools and strategies discussed to continue their growth and progress.
In our sessions, clients should feel safe, supported, and understood. Previous and current clients often report feeling they are in a warm, nonjudgmental space where they can express themselves freely and authentically.
The hope is that all clients would feel empowered, knowing that their voice matters, their experiences are valid, and their journey is respected.
It’s important that each client leaves each session feeling a sense of clarity and connection with themselves and the work they are doing together with their therapist.
Successful treatment completion for my clients involves several key elements:
1. Achieving Personal Goals: At the beginning of their therapy journey, clients state their specific goals. These could include improved relationships, better management of mental health symptoms, or personal growth and development. Meeting personal goals that they begin to achieve is a good sign!
2. Enhanced Coping Skills: Clients develop effective coping strategies and tools that they can use independently to manage challenges and stressors in their daily lives.
3. Increased Self-Awareness: Clients gain a deeper understanding of themselves, including their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and how these affect their overall well-being.
4. Improved Quality of Life: Clients experience a noticeable improvement in their overall quality of life, including better relationships, greater satisfaction in various life areas, and enhanced emotional resilience.
5. Sustained Progress: Clients maintain their progress during therapy and feel confident in their ability to continue applying what they've learned beyond the therapeutic setting.
6. Positive Feedback: Clients report feeling supported, understood, and empowered throughout their treatment, and they recognize the therapeutic process's value and impact.
7. Consider integrating "maintenance sessions" into your therapeutic journey. Therapy and successful treatment should be viewed as an ongoing process with evolving goals and continuous improvement. Both long-term and short-term objectives can change, and even after achieving initial goals, I recommend periodic maintenance sessions—typically once a month. These sessions serve as regular "check-ins" to ensure continuity of care and adherence to insurance requirements, which often mandate at least one session every 90 days. Maintenance sessions allow us to sustain our therapeutic relationship and address any new issues or goals that may arise. This ongoing support ensures that we can consistently tackle any challenges as they emerge. Many clients find this approach fosters a strong, trusting relationship with their therapist, sometimes lasting over 20 years.
In essence, successful treatment completion means that clients leave therapy feeling equipped and empowered to lead fulfilling lives with the tools and insights they’ve gained.
